Is this car worth inheriting?

Asked by Bart Oct 17, 2024 at 08:26 PM about the 1999 Jaguar XJ-Series XJ8 RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Is it worth inheriting a '99 XJ8 with 83, 350 miles; well maintained; but the
plastic tensioners have not been replaced. The rear damper bushings and
struts need replaced. I have spoken with 2 service writers familiar with the
cars. Both say "They are NOT good cars, require a lot of maintenance, plus
this car has a lot of age on it regardless of the mileage.

For once the service writers are right, nothing but money pits. But if it’s free, you might consider fixing it then sell it before something else breaks. There are some Jaguar people out there.

Since someone thought enough of you to leave you their car, I would thankfully accept the vehicle, then sell it if you don't want it. Use the money from the sale of the Jaguar towards a vehicle that you do want. Jaguars, like other high end imports, are usually high maintenance and not cheap to fix as they get older. You also need to find a shop that specializes in imports. Your local run of the mill shop or chain type of shop will have no idea how to work on a car like this. Jim
