My fan won't come on in a 96 chevy lumina, and has caused overheating could it be the sending unit, already checked the relay switch and it didn't work but it does come on when we use to wires to it??

Do you have power to the motor? Is the fuse blown? You can have someone check the fan motor, but did you say you bypassed the relay and the fan worked? For now you can bypass the relay and wire the fan to run all the time when the ignition switch is on. It will not hurt anything, and keep the engine cool until you want to change the relay out.
