I can't get the hatchback open...the lever doesn't work nor the lock.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The lock was frozen when I got it about 5 years ago.  Then the lever inside the car on the driver's side stopped working.  My mechanic says the cable is encased so he can't get to it and that there is no easy way to remove the panel in the back to work the lock.  HELP PLEASE!

Did the cable lever break or did the cable or lock. If you can not get to the cable there is no easy way to do this without breaking the interor trim. The trim can be cut and replaced after the lock is fixed.
