I have a 2000 SL with a starting problem. You can hit the starter and it will just start and die back out just as quickly. It only does this once in a while and when it does, wait 15 minutes starts

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Only does this when it is inconvenient but have changed the fuel pump,
battery starter, ignition switch, ignition relay and all the fuses are good.  Has
me stumped and no one has been able to give me an answer.

basic as it seems, corrosion happens at all the electrical connections because the battery actually sweats acid and causes things to corrode....like the cable clamps (wire brush or replace) and the connections to the chassis and the engine off the black terminal...these must carry 50 amps and need to be big, hearty and CLEAN...also the connection to the starter solenoid...might undo and brush that one clean too~ what your system (ECU) would like to see is at least 12 or 12.5 volts...battery weak and ECU is not reliable anymore, due to "brown power"~ is as simple as a wirebrush and bottle of water~...and socket wrench(s)~

....also a Ten year old battery will not be up to par...and will no longer accept a charge...so looks like you NEED a New battery...my pop who worked at Interstate developed the "Lead free" car battery~

Had changed out every thing from the ignition switch, Ignition relay, new battery and posts and finally think that it is a bad silinoid on the starter. I would make contact most of the time but every once in a while it would not. Changed the starter and will see if this changes the porblme.

thanks for your report...I care about all of your folks!~ often think a bit negatively about Saturn...but they are built just like any other~ sort-of an American Toyota equivalent (or hoped to)~ Saturns are big around Clearlake, California...not quite sure why~ they are different (just like their motto)~
