Saturn automatic transmission problem

Asked by Kenny May 04, 2016 at 07:21 PM about the 2002 Saturn S-Series 3 Dr SC1 Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002/sc1 Saturn 3door 1.9l 4cylinder
engine. It jerks when shifting from 1st up, it also
tacs up to around 3500-4k before attempting to
shift. Also it shakes my car when shifting from
neutral to first. No loud noises no screeching just
hard shifting, high rpms before attempting to shift,
and jerks when going into drive. I’ve replaced the
transmission filter and filled it with the correct
transmission fluid and ammount of transmission
fluid per my owners manual
I just can’t figure this cars problem out. It has 156k
on it but up untill this randomly started happening
it drove fine with no problems. The only code it’s
throwing is the secondary air injection pump, but
that seems to be working on a cold start. Any
ideas?

Try adding some Lucas Transmission Stop Slip it can help with hard shifting. Do not over fill

Don't use Lucas. It the line pressure sleeve in the transmissions valve body. Buy a sonnax updated valve body on ebay for 200$ . had same issue with my saturn sc1.

There is not a solenoid for this type of vehicle. I was told the same thing for mine and when I went to the parts store to get that part they told me to do a tranny flush.

There is actually 5 solenoids in the valve body of the transmission. They are all interchangeable. The GM part number is 21003344. You can pick them up for around $50 online if you google that number.

My 2002 Saturn which I bought for $150 just started almost popping into neutral and then slamming into drive really hard but if I put it in 3rd gear everything seems fine so I guess there goes the gas mileage I'm trying to reverse slam which is putting it in reverse chocking the wheels and letting it run for 30 minutes is the reverse solenoids don't get used very often and supposedly that might fix the problem but I just started 25 minutes ago I'll let you know if it works

you have to remove the top transmission pan under the battery and the valve body comes out then you need to find the bad solenoid and replace it.using a cheap harbor freight volt meter will do the job. it will shift hard a few times after you replace it just until the fluid runs through the tranny and it will be fixed.Sounds complicated but i have bought so many Saturn's back when they were hot sellers at the auction and 9 out of 10 times it worked.sold over 100 in case you were wondering. I wouldn't use additives unless last resort.

I had the problem now its fixed. You have a valve shift body on the automatic trans. It has a small piston or two that move back and forth. The valve body is aluminum and the piston is steel. Wear around 125k to 175k miles this starts happening. The transmission guy near me fixed it. They have an after market valve body that is bored and a steel sleeve inserted. Car has 217k miles on it now with no problem.
