Car dying after new battery and alternator

Asked by Sonja Apr 17, 2021 at 01:53 PM about the 2007 Ford Five Hundred SEL AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Two months
ago we put a
brand new
battery and
alternator in
my car. About
a week ago the
dome lights
decided
periodically to
turn into strobe
lights. Figure
there's a short
somewhere.
Yesterday the
radio started
clicking on and
off. Last night
the damn abs
light and
traction control
light came
(which was
what was
coming on
when
alternator went
out instead of
battery light).
Anyway those
two came on
car died. Jump
start it and it
runs for maybe
five mins
nothing will
come on no
dash lights
radio nothing
then car dies.
Will not start
back up
without being
jumped off
again and does
the same
thing. What
issue do I look
for now

make sure battery has a full charge and battery connections all good, positive and negative. Everything off, use a digital multimeter across battery posts, the generic spec for a full charge is 12.6 volts. If much below that, get a battery charger and get it charged up. Key off, check voltage at generator bat terminal, should be hot. If not hot have to check wiring circuit. also check 10 amp fuse in diagram. Also note fusible links in diagram. Engine running, check voltage again at generator bat terminal, the second reading should be higher than the first or generator isn't charging for some reason? The generator is computer controlled, any trouble codes for charging system? even if battery and generator are new, if problem with wiring circuits, the new parts won't work. Mostly the battery is used for starting the vehicle. When the engine starts, the generator should carry the load for systems.

here is other part of diagram for generator. I can only help with testing. Good luck.
