Well, and EJ series motor that Subaru makes will bolt right up. It all just depends on what you want to do. For example, if you wanted to put a 2.5RS motor in it, it would be plug and play. Depending on what year the motor is from. Now, if you want to swap a wrx motor into it, you have to merge the outbacks wiring harness with the wrx's harness. It is a long and expensive project. It all depends on your budget.
If it is a pre-OBD2 car, it'll require a new ECU and wiring harness for an OBD2 swap. I dont know when Subaru went OBD2, but the national standard officially started in '96.
i also have another question... what year of the 2.5rs motor would be the best to swap in?? and would i need a new tranny?? thanks
It depends. Some people swear the DOHC EJ25 is stronger, but I've got a SOHC from '00, and it's fine at 215k. Any EJ block will fit, short of the EJ20H or R, as the second turbo interferes with the steering column on LHD cars. As for the tranny, no, you can leave yours from the 1.8L in. You might want to consider switching to a 6-speed from a '04-on WRX, though. All of the transmissions from 93-01 were the same 5-speed, regardless of engine. What you DON'T have, is the rear LSD that a 2.5 has stock (although not in '95).
