Really, my best advice to you is REBUILD your engine, and find a great qualified independent mechanic to do this. Have them use the newer multi layered head gaskets. Otherwise, get a replacement car. I don't know how many miles are on your car, or its overall condition, but, you may want to evaluate all of these things before proceeding. An exchange engine is NOT a good idea. You don't know what you are getting. Good luck.
Jdbillman- well, don't leave us in suspense, are you going to rebuild your engine?? How many miles are on your car?? See this below, it's not excess mileage even at 120,000 miles. These cars are known for going between 200,000 and 300,000 miles. http://www.subaruhighmileageclub.com/miles500000.html http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/2007/Subaru/Legacy-4- Cyl/Wagon-5D-i-AWD/Values
Thank you Mark. I am having a rebuild. My current engine died at just under 197,000. This is my 3rd Subaru. Love them. In my opinion, there is no better car on the road.
Jdbillman, you're welcome. We're you able to get the multi layered head gaskets that are stainless steel and much improved over the originals. I know that you are making a wise decision here, what are they charging you for the rebuild? And, if my answers have been helpful for you, please mark one my previous posts "best answer". Thank you and good luck. ----Mark
By the way, I think Subaru's are great cars and from a strictly speaking economic point, no matter how much it costs you, an engine rebuild is less expensive than 60 more months of car payments. And, your car has already given you almost 200,000 miles of service! So, by fixing the engine, you could easily go another 150,000 miles. Good for you! http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/2007/Subaru/Legacy-4- Cyl/Wagon-5D-i-AWD/Values
Jdbillman- hey, do you have the original transmission in your car? Maybe you had to replace a clutch?

I know next to nothing about cars but have a similar question and hoping someone can help me out. My 2007 subaru outback 4 cylinder manual transmission was supposed to have had gaskets and ring job done when I was in corpus approx $3K. I arrived in CA right after getting this done and realized I was losing oil. I am now told the ring job wasn't done. I was quoted $6K for a new motor. I have been trying to figure out what to do. 6K seems high. Is it possible to get a "new" motor for my car or are they quoting a rebuild and why is it so high?
Check your email, I just sent you a private message.

2006 Suburu question here. Son says he was quoted $7,700 to replace new short block. He says his car has "Cylinder 3 has a leak and is venting exhaust into the gearbox. Also, one of the rods is loose and rattling". Seven grand seems high. Car is in Co Springs.

I have the exact same car and am looking to either rebuild the engine or replace it. How much did they estimate your rebuild to be?
I JUST HAD A NEW ENGINE INSTALLED ON MY 08 OUTBACK BY DEALER $8,000
Please advise my issue. I have 2012 Subaru outback and around 80,000miles. Last Saturday popup the engine check light and intense vibration in drive. I stop the car and towed. Yesterday towed my car to Subaru dealer shop but I got bad answer from them. They said "we did not find reason for this problem and if you want we can open engine and try to fix but nor sure, also this cost should be $3,000~$4,000." ..... How can I do.... Please advice....
To the person above - start a new thread! Post the CEL trouble codes so we have some idea of what is going on! The dealers answer is really not acceptable so do more investigation before disassembling the engine.
I have the exact same problem as GuruDZY8B ? What do you find out.
I just had the same issue as GuruDZY8B and Whizzo. Any resolution?
Since they changed my parking break sensor and that didn't solve the problem. Then I got a lot of excuses. I am going to try the national call for action and report them for parts changing. I put a crankshaft position sensor in at a cost of cost $25. I have not been able to test it yet. It's sitting in a yard until that is resolved. It's my opinion they know what the cause is but don't want to cover the repair or have the problem publicized ? Best of luck. It's very frustrating.
My car will drive normal for a while after it sits for a few days. I have had several mechanics tell me that it couldn't be internal engine failure and run normal after sitting for a while ?
If the engine runs normally most of the time you have an intermittent problem with either the fuel or ignition, probably not a mechanical issue.
How much should it cost to have a engine rebuilt in a 2001 subura outback.
Subaru knows they put bad gaskets on there cars n cotonu to buy take no responsablety they leakoil every weRe in r rivers n bays it's very dirty enviromentle distater let it b known
