Mazda AT light

Asked by Blonde_swan Aug 08, 2018 at 01:50 PM about the 2007 Mazda MAZDA3 s Grand Touring Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently bought a 2007 Mazda3 with 186k miles,
it’s a 2.3 with a 5 speed automatic transmission.
Day after it was purchased I was driving down the
freeway going 70 mph and it all of a sudden shifts
down from 5th to 3rd making me almost eat the
steering wheel while this happened to AT light came
on. This all happened in the matter of 1 to 2
seconds then went back to normal like nothing
happened. I now drive in manual mode and when it
does happen it doesn’t downshift just feels like a
light tap on the breaks and AT light goes on then off
again. Took it to a transmission shop and they said
it was not reading any codes but could be the range
sensor? Before I start throwing money at this thing I
was wondering if someone had the same
experience as I and could help me out, thank you.

I had the same issue before with my 2008 Mazda 3. I took the car to a repair shop and got quoted for $800 to change the module. I then decided to go to a Mazda dealer which usually costs more on everything than other repair shops. I don't know why but Mazda dealer said the new module would be free. I only needed to pay $155 for their labors. I am not sure why the new part was free, but in this case, I would encourage you to talk to a Mazda dealer first.
