The engine in my RX8 shuts off on its own occasionally when in a parking lot

Asked by jordinea Sep 14, 2014 at 11:33 PM about the 2007 Mazda RX-8 Touring

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This has happened three times.  The first time I was backing out of a parking spot. The
dash lights flickered a bit then the engine turned off.  When I turned the key it started
just fine.  About two weeks later it happened again.  I was backing out of a parking
spot again.  I had my headlights on.  The headlights dimmed and the dash lights
flickered.  The engine died.  The third time I was driving slowly through a parking lot.
My headlights started to dim and I could hear the engine struggling so I stepped on the
gas and that prevented it from turning off.

There has to be trouble codes stored in the ECU. Go to AutoZone and get the codes read for free. That way you can fix it right the first time without throwing parts at it.

Check your battery connections and if they are in good shape, have your battery/charging system checked first. Auto zone is a great answer. if you can get your car there maybe the check engine light will read a code which tell you the general area of the problem.

SOLUTION: This happened to me as well. It's your reverse light switch shorting out. What happens is, you put the car in reverse and the reverse lights switch tries to activate but shorts out and blows its own fuse. Then power get sent to next fuse down the line which is your starter fuse which gets fried. Short- term fix (very short-term) would be to disconnect the reverse light switch and replace it as soon as possible.

Car Dies While Idling But Restarts Later: What Are The Reasons 1-Fault in the Transmission:This particular problem is unique to automatic transmission vehicles. The manual transmissions have a manual clutch for transmitting power. An auto gearbox has a torque converter instead to do this task. If it is cracked or damaged, or the fluid level in the transmission becomes low, the vehicle will die at the time of idling. A broken torque converter solenoid can also be the culprit. 2-Clogged Fuel Filter 3-Fuel Pump and Fuel Injectors 4-Defective Mass Air Flow Sensor 5-Malfunctioning Idle Air Control Actuator 6-Issues with the Wiring Harness
