Haven't done this on the Maxima, but I replaced the passenger brake light on my '01 Frontier. What I'd say do is remove the trunk carpet from the left side of the trunk and look for screws that hold the brake light in place on the inside. Once you loosen those, the entire fixture should slide out, and you can pull the cover off and replace the bulb. Good luck.

its easy, pull away the carpent in the trunk on the side wall, then you see 3 or 4 screws that need to come out unplug the wireing
