Headlight scratch

Asked by 911LEB Mar 19, 2016 at 08:01 PM about the 2006 Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I noticed today a scratch on my Carrera headlight.
It is about an inch and not very shallow. I am not
sure if it was caused by a debris or someone did it
with a key. Is there anyway I can fix it myself without
ruining the light or it has to be replaced?

You may be able to polish some or all of it out with a headlight restoration kit from any auto chain like Napa

Thanks Mark, I am just worried that any chemical to fix the scratch will take off the costing that comes originally on the plastic to protect it from discoloration. What is your input on that? The new headlight is about $600...

I just did a restoration on a 2005 Cayenne headlight which had discolored, using a Mothers product. I haven't noticed any chemical coating on there

The coatings are usually clear and you cannot see them, If the ones you restored had discoloration that means the Protective coatings are already gone. (If you live in a southern state like Florida, that will last around 2 to 3 years unless the car is always garage kept or covered). Can you tell me the name of the product that you used on the Cayenne, headlight? Thanks

I agree with Andrew on trying to polish the headlight since its already been damaged theres really nothing to lose. However I would consult a professional detailer about doing the repair. Unless you are comfortable doing the repair your self ei. ( wetsanding / buffing / ect ). Worst case senerio you have to source out a good condition used head light and replace the damaged unit. You can check with your local LKQ or the LA Porsche recycler, to search for a good condition used one, it will save you hundreds over going with new from the dealership. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.
