Check the cable linkage on the passenger side of the transmission. There are two cables secured to the side of the transmission by what appear to be "C" clips. Make sure the cable(s) is securely in the clip(s). These clips are delicate and easily bent but do an important job. Also the very end of the cable is pushed on a ball fitting on the end of the linkage to the tranny. Make sure that is secure and pressed on tight. Use a channel lock took to confirm the connection. Good luck.
