if it is a floor shifter, i had problems with it too. sometimes it was an alignment problem or it was the electrical connection in the shifter plate. carefully detach the plastic plate from the console. i'm not sure how yours is. my 89 model year is differently fastened most likely.

thank you, mine is on the column. so your saying it may be a cable/wire that has come loose?
column is totally different. i have not took one apart yet.
YEA THE COLUM SHIFT INDICATOR USES A CABLE AND A SPRING . WHEN YOU MOVE THE COLUM TO THE RIGHT (CLOCKWISE ) THE CABLE IS SUPPOSED TO PULL THE INDICATOR OUT OF PARK INTO REVERSE AND SO ON ,,, THERE IS A SPRING TO RETURN THE INDICATOR ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE NEEDLE WHEN YOU GO FROM DRIVE TO PARK FOR EXAMPLE THE SPRING IS SUPPOSED TO PULL THE NEDLE BACK TO THE LEFT , OR PARK POSITION . USUALLY THE CABLE COMES OFF THE STERRING COLUMN OR IT GETS PINCHED BY ONE OF THE IDLER PULLIES ... EITHER WAY ,IT AINT NO BIGGIE ...
