If the timing chain broke it could be that other damage happened at the time. Any
time you get a diagnosis, require the dealer to give you specific information instead
of general statements like "replace timing chain". As a customer, you are entitled to
a clear description of the problem and the solution. A quote of $4000-$8000 could
be anything and is past the likely value of the car. IOW, if you repaired it you
couldn't sell it to break even. Avoid dealers who are taking obvious advantage of
you in this way. Before you do anything else, get that detailed breakdown of what
is wrong and what the solution is. A wide range of cost like that is worthless. A new
engine would not cost $8000 including installation so that should be a red flag that
the dealer is likely taking you for a ride. Call around, find a better service dealer,
even a non GM dealership and have the car towed there.
