My car will jerk and jerk then smooth out at 20mph can get it to 40. But tonight it didn't want to start but finally did. check engine light is on. Is it the fuel pump or what?

most likely a buggered EGR...the fuel pressure regulator could be faulty and would not show an OBD-II code...have your trouble codes read....the "reset codes"~
