No taillights/ left blinker

Asked by GuruDGDN4 Oct 03, 2017 at 01:48 AM about the 1996 Buick Century Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I don't know of a 1996 Buick century wiring harness and mine melted so
I went wire for wire and fixed EVERY single one from the engine wiring
harness now my taillights and left blinker won't work need those wire
colors. It starts on the left side of the engine and goes through the
firewall.

every thing needs a good ground and old worn bulb sockets can do funny things , I'd find a manual with the diagrams , once they go through the firewall they go in all kinds of un known directions , when doing auto electric I get schooled about every time , why did they melt ?

sorry poor description they put a bigger fuse in the #10 so it fried the engine harness so i rewired the whole thing with no harness connectors but i dont know the colors of tailights and left blinker and theyre not working ive got the chiltons but im no expert

well ill do my best ive heard of running a wire from the fuse block to the tailight harness i dont know ill just have to see im trying the justanswer website right now ill see how that works

Take your time , the thing about "running the wire " is that they've already done that , Use a jumper wire and a multi tester to see if there's shorts or continuity .the brake light may go through the directional switch .

that website was a load o crap thanks for taking the time sir but I literally had the wire harness connector melt down and had to bypass the whole connector now there is just a continuous stream of wire and there is no way of telling me which wire is which as far as multi tester jumper wire you might as well be talking a foreign language absolutely and utterly no idea how to what Id like to do is upload a photo off the chiltons and see if you could tell me what color goes to where off that engine harness mess

if you could get the firewall disconnect from a salvage yard that might help you I'm not sure , the wires can change colors once they go through the wall , it's a complicated job , I'd probably be pulling my hair out , I can't find good wiring diagrams on line either , do chiltons even have them ? A haynes manual would , I'll see what I've got lying around may be that would help

the directional switch may have got fired , if you can take a look at it and see if it's toasted

I found diagrams for the buick regal and other GM cars , you won't be able to read them if I post them they're small print and complicated but like I said the brake light goes through the directional switch , if you could ask a specific question I'll take a look and try to help , I mean without an electrical understanding this may be difficult

hey thanks for the reply im not sure but my brake lights work just not the taillights and left blinker I have the book but i dont know how to read it like i said i could take a picture of the books diagram and we take a look if that sounds possible

also some sort of switch could be possible because now my fuse is popping so pretty sure i got a short
