what does it mean when my brake light comes on

my mother had the bruick dealership to do some brake work on her 2006 bruick lacross with in the last year all i dont know what work was done , but now a red light appears on her dash ,she took it back to them and she asked could it be low on brake fluid
and said i wanted to know what could be wrong with it?

No the brake fluid level is fine and the emergency brake is all the way up

I don't see any oil leaks on the ground , is there a switch on either on the brake pedal or on the master cylinder under the hood that could be the cause of the brake lite on the dashboard
