Strange problems happening all at once

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Hello everyone, recently my car has been having
some really strange issues. It started with the
security light coming on, which now stays solid
while driving. Shortly after this happened it began
stalling. It will start right back up, but then the idle
will be really high. This also seems to affect the
transmission operation, but only when it is acting
up. I have already tried replacing the ecm as I read
somewhere that it helped someone with similar
issues. It did seem to help for a while, but now the
problem has returned. I am at a loss for what to try
next so any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a security issue, bad key chip, wiring issues this old, security module. You need a good independent shop with the knowledge for this vehicle, stay away from the dealer.
You have GMs VATS (Vehicle Anti Theft Security) system. Your situation sounds like a problem with the BCM (Body Control Module). The number one problem with these systems is the ignition lock cylinder. There's two tiny wires that touch the chip on the ignition key when you put it into the lock. These wires break so there's no contact with the chip. When this happens though you have a no crank and no start condition because the computer thinks the vehicle is trying to be started without a key. But you should check the lock cylinder first anyhow by going under the dash and unplugging the connector for the lock cylinder. It's a two wire connector with an orange sleeve on the wires. One black wire and one white wire. Insert the ignition key into the lock. Use an ohm meter to check the resistance across the black and white wires while you move the ignition lock through all the positions. If you get no reading or an erratic resistance reading the lock cylinder is bad. The new lock cylinder will come with a template to cut new VATS ignition keys. There were fifteen possibilities. You must measure the resistance of the chip on the ignition key, then compare the reading to a chart you can pull up doing a Google search. This will tell you which VATS key blank you need. You will then use the template that came with the new ignition lock cylinder to cut your correct VATS key blanks so they'll work. Your situation, however, sounds like a BCM problem. The BCM reads the resistance of the chip on the VATS key and gives the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) the ok to crank and start the engine. However, if the BCM knows it has a problem it will, usually, allow the engine to start and run but the security system light on the dash will stay on. In the meantime, if the PCM loses the fuel enable signal from the BCM the engine will stall, even if you're driving down the road, and will not restart for three minutes or until the fuel enable signal is again received by the PCM. The good news is that when the PCM loses the fuel enable signal a trouble code is stored in the PCM. The check engine light or service engine soon light will NOT come on and stay on when this code sets. My advice is first check the ignition lock cylinder. If that's ok, scan the PCM, which is OBD I by the way, and look for the "fuel enable signal lost" touble code. If you have that code, replace the BCM. If you don't have that code in the PCM, scan the BCM for trouble codes. If you get no VATS trouble codes from the BCM, replace the BCM anyhow. This is exactly how I diagnosed and fixed the security system problem with my '94 Fleetwood which uses the same VATS system. Jim
And yes, Gene is correct about not going to the Dealer for this! I wasted $700 and wound up having to learn about the system myself, then fix it myself. They had no clue!! Jim

Do you know where exactly underneath the dash these wires are. I looked but I can't seem to find them.
They come down the steering column from the ignition lock cylinder. Look for an orange sleeve, the wires are inside the sleeve. One black wire and one white wire. Jim
