no oil pressure, engine runs fine

Asked by mkbinky Apr 16, 2015 at 01:56 AM about the 1995 Chevrolet C/K 2500 Cheyenne Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So today I took my truck to a friends to get a trailer, hooked up and when I got home
the check guage light eas on and my oil pressure was 0.  Shut the truck off, checked
oil level, full and still looking new, been about 1500 miles on it.  Looked under truck, no
leaking or spraying of oil.  Started truck, pressure guage goes to 20 then drops to 0.
engine sounds normal, even when revving it.  Guage used to read 80 when starting
and around 40 at operating temp.  Is this the sending unit?  Its a vortec 7.4L with
160,000 miles on it

Most probably it is the sending unit or the connection to it is loose. If it was a bad oil pump your engine would already be toast.

I have a 1996 454 Silverado, 131K mikes, started showing same symptoms exactly. I replaced the oil sending unit- made no difference, still bounces around 5 lbs or so at idle. I did some research and some are saying it could be the gauge it's self. Being a car guy that's built a few engines and worked on many, changing the sending unit was the first logical step. I purchased the truck used in good condition just 5K miles ago, had been well- maintained but now I almost have to assume they loaded it with motor honey when they sold it as I have done nothing to tax the engine in the brief time I've had it. Bottom line- I do not think it's the gauge, I think it's the bearings in reading other's issues. I will put a mechanical oil gauge on next to confirm my suspicions then most likely will have to move on to putting new rod and possibly main bearings in. I expected this engine to last beyond 200k with proper maintenance which it had.
