Stalls in drive but not reverse

Asked by Looking4help Jun 15, 2017 at 11:23 PM about the 1999 Chevrolet C/K 1500 LS Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just recently bought a 99 K1500 suburban with
5.7. The truck ran fine for the first 4 days. Then
while driving it started losing electrical power for
just a split second and come back. It continued to
get worse until it stalled. Then it went through a
phase of instrument panel going crazy which
related to it not starting. Now it will start and idle
just fine. I can put in reverse and it's fine. I can
apply brake and gas will not stall. It's also fine in
neutral.  But soon as I put it in any forward gears
the instrument panel goes crazy and motor dies.
I've checked and cleaned battery and cables had
battery and alternator checked. Replaced ignition
switch, fuel pump module, fuel filter. Any advice
appreciated.

Your truck should have the digital gear indicator. The one where the gear selected is underlined. That one has the range switch on the outside of the transmission where the linkage is connected. It's also the neutral safety switch. You might either have burned or broken wires in that harness, A loose connection. Or an internally shorted switch.
