Trans stuck in reverse

Asked by Drewvan2019 May 18, 2019 at 08:30 PM about the 1998 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Cheyenne Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 98 Chevy 1500 and I haven’t been able to
fix my problem. The transmission is stuck in
reverse but the shifter moves freely. When I start it
up it’s automatically in reverse and I can’t even
change gears from the transmission side. Does
anyone have any ideas on fixing this? If so I would
appreciate it.

get under the truck disconnect the rods to the levers [carter pins] tap with a hammer the levers left,,, right left ,,,..right find neutral jack up one rear wheel if needed ,problem is its two gears shifting together locking one against the other , rods need adjusted to levers while in neutral

Which levers am I moving cause all I see is the cable assembly and the metal piece that connects the trans and cable together. I tried to manually change the gear on the trans side and I can’t get it to budge
