The 1997 timing should be set to zero @#1 tdc What is a timing bypass plug, never heard of it.

I have seen it now called a timing bypass plug, timing advance plug, and a spout connector. Evidently it "resets" the timing or stops it from advancing itself automatically. I am NOT the one working on it, my husband and son-in-law are. SOL is the mechanic, but still a young mechanic. He has no problem getting the timing set where it should be, but after getting valves adjusted correctly, apparently they feel the timing is keeping if from turning over (it is trying). Hence, he needs to find this wire to unplug.

Evidently it is specific to years, and sometimes under the dash, and sometimes under the hood by the firewall, whatever that is. But it is specifically a tan/brown wire with white stripe sometimes, and all by itself. Thanks for trying to help!

There isn't one on the 96+ chevy trucks. You have to set it with the appropriate scan tool with the cam retard at 0 degrees.
