Have you ever heard of a 96 Chevy C1500 that runs rough backfiring then running perfect?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 96 Chevy Silverado C1500 needed some front end work done. Until I could raise the money to get the parts it sat for 9 months. After getting ball joints tirods, really everything fixed, it struggled under light acceleration. After replacing virtually everything it could be I was driving on the hwy. and it acted like it was going to die when it suddenly backfired and blew a huge puff of smoke out the exhaust. Now it runs perfect. It runs like it never had this problem. I am dumbfounded and would like any information you could give me. does this narrow my problem down? Do I even have a problem any more?
