well i plan on changing the pinion seal on my truck(10 bolt)....I was told to make sure and not over tighten the nut that goes into the crush sleeve....The question im asking is about how tight should i be looking to torque it?

To do this properly, you need to replace the crush sleeve when you disassemble the pinion seal area. You should get a kit or at least the sleeve and a new seal. The crush sleeve is not reusable. The torque spec is rather specific as this crush sleeve sets the preload for the bearing behind the seal. The torque on the nut is what causes the crush sleeve to "crush" and set the preload. not enough and you won't set the preload properly, too much and you will destroy the bearing. You will need to call a dealewr and get this specification. Now that I've got the "official" way out of the way, there is a way to cheat. you can mark the nut in relation to the threaded shaft it threads onto, so you can tell where the nut was originally. Then, count the amount of turns it takes to get the nut off. Remove the nut and yoke. Leave the crush sleeve in place. replace the seal. Then, clean the threads with brake cleaner to make sure they are perfectly clean. apply a small amount of blue loctite (not green or red, blue) to the threads of the input shaft. Install the yoke, then the nut, installing it the exact number of turns you took it off, and making sure the marks all lined up again. At this point, you are done, and you haven't lost your preload nor do you need to know the torque setting.
for a ten bolt rear it should be about 20 inch pounds while you are turning the torque wrench. tighten the nut down till its snug and put on your torque wrench and turn it about 3 revolutions. if it is under twents hold the yoke with a pipe wrench and tighten just a little at at time till the torque wrench reads a constant 20 inch pounds for the revolutions. p.s there will be a little fluxuation when turning the torque wrench bou as long as it si around a constant 20 inch pounds its good somwhere in the range of 18- 22 inch pounda is good
