'89' Corvette with 350 engine.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had starting issues with this car. It would start and run for 3 seconds and then die off. Had to do this 3 or 4 time before it would remain running. I had an error code for the Mass Air Flow Sensor. I replaced it and still had the same problems and the same error code. My mechanic replaced the mass air flow sensor for the second time. This appears to have corrected the starting problem. but the car on occasions will shut down without any notification. It doesn't run rough, spit or sputter. It just shuts down instantly. I still have a mass air flow error code.

As much as I appreciate a response. I'm not really looking for someone to tell me my car is a piece of crap. If you can help, great... if not.. Please don't answer. Thank you.

Without having the car to test, all we can do is guess from the information given. As you found out, just because it was new, does not mean it will work. There may be a lose connection, or the computer needs to be reprogramed with the new sensor. There may be other issues that had caused the sensor to fail, or yet a second sensor may be bad. The computer is getting a bad read and may shut down to protect the engine. A lose wire or poorly connected cable may be the problem or a hose is cracked letting in more air than is needed. A good thorough testing should be in order. C-4s had their problems, yes, as did the C-3s and C-5s act. The 84 and the 68 Corvettes in the first year of production had new design issues that were worked out after production began. A Corvette specialist may be aware of what to look for as he or she has had the problem before. Good luck. Get a full diagnostic check of the entire systems and hope it is well worth the cost of the tests.
