2007 Camry won't start when warm

Asked by James Feb 21, 2017 at 02:56 PM about the 2007 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My camry has developed a issue starting in the past month. When the car
is driven around and re-started 2-3 times, each time it gets slightly harder
to start. After about 3 times it no longer fires up. It will crank and struggle,
but not start until the vehicle has cooled down (about 35 mins).

-It always starts strong when cold.
-If you repeatedly turn the engine off and on within a few seconds, it will
crank and fire up most of the time. But if you let

It has a CEL for Catalytic Converter. I replaced the crankshaft sensor but
no fix.

Try replacing your ECT sensor. If no luck there, clean your throttle body and IAC with throttle body cleaner. Check Youtube for how to vids. Also try to clean your MAF with MAF cleaner. Post back with results......

I suspect a fuel delivery problem. Next time this vehicle fails to start...smack the bottom of the fuel tank with your hand. A fuel pressure test is in order.

A buddy of mine smacked the fuel tank, which didn't help starting. Neither did priming with the ignition key. I'll get the fuel pressure test done.

Typically what we do is install a fuel pressure gauge and a scan tool and road test the vehicle. We bring along a spark tester and a noid light to check fuel injectors pulses and spark during the no start event. You might suggest whomever checks fp...to also check EXHAUST SYSTEM BACK PRESSURE. A bad cat could be the root cause of the issue.

Many thanks! I watched this video and the knocking CC can be heard in my car too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zovqAeGspTs It's the exact same sound, and only when you rev it.

UPDATE: Codes and symptoms say it's my MAF sensor. I cleaned it and that helped for a week. I think it's faulty....

OK...good diagnosis. Do not forget to check the PCV system. A dirty oily MAF means that clean air going into the engine is contaminated with oil droplets from a faulty dirty PCV valve or hose. What Engine in this vehicle? Is this engine consuming a lot of motor oil?

2.4 L 4-cylinder on a 2007 Camry LE, which has long been known for the oil consumption issue with this engine. Yes, my vehicle goes through 1 quart every ~200 miles at highway RPMs. I'm not kidding. No oil leaks...just bad pistons from my understanding...

Bingo......you are correct. Toyota will fix that oil burner for FREE...if it has less than 150000 miles and is less than 10 years old. You might consider running your Vin and get a history on previous owners and repair history....an...most important......when the vehicle was first sold. If all else fails...there is a Class Action Lawsuit you can join. Let us know your thoughts.

Deep my car didn't have this oil consumption problem. At first the dealer said it didn't know anything about it. My car has 270000 miles and they suggested buying a new one. It was the manufacturer that sent me a notice just out of the blue saying that was an oil consumption problem. When I contacted the dealer again all of a sudden they knew about the problem. I had to document the consumption problem. After that they schedule it for being fixed at their full cost.

James Did you ever find the problem with your car? I have an 08 Camry that is experiencing the same issues of not being able to crank after the engine gets hot.(20-30) min. The MAF sensor, crank shaft, air filter, spark plugs, and coils were all replaced. We are still having the same problem and literally can’t drive to the local gas station without leaving the car running.

Ala.....when you indicate your vehicle will not crank....does that mean it sounds like the battery is weak or dead....or....the vehicle cranks over well....like the battery and starter motor are good....but the engine will not fire up...start?

After I try cranking after 4x’s it pulls all of the fire out of the battery..After spinning for so long it drains the battery completely. The starter, alternator, motor, and battery were tested and I was told they are all good , but with the constant spinning the engine will not fire up until the car cools down completely.

Ok...engine cranks but sill not fire up...start...until the engine cools down. When the engine does start up are there any warning lights on or flashing. have you had the computers on this vehicle Scanned for codes? Some Auto Parts stores will do this for free?

After replacing damn near everything, I had the mechanic put in a new fuel pump, which fixed the problem. I still can't believe a faulty fuel pump could limp along for 4-6 months without failing completely. Even the mechanic agreed that it usually doesn't "half work" for so long. Toyota made that part very well.

And FYI...at one point when the car wouldn't start at all, a buddy of mine sprayed MAF sensor cleaner into the throttle body while I laid on the gas. It was a hail-mary, but the car fired right up. Unbelievable! I imagine starting fluid would also work.

Hello everyone after replacing the MAF sensor, coils, spark plugs, air filter, and crank shaft sensor the car is still doing the same thing. I will be purchasing a foul pump today so I will let you guys know how that goes.

Upon reading the above posts it seems you have a similar issue. However...why not explore the cause of your problem for free..rather than spending money on a quess. The next time you get this vdhicle running...take it to a Auto Parts store that will Scan your Computers for trouble codes. This way we can have a better idea of what might be the root cause of your no start issue. AUTOZONE....provides this free service. Record the Codes...both the ID and Numbers. Get back with results.

I have a 2009 Toyota Camry that’s experiencing the same trouble starting when heated or hot after running many errands. Yes the car is well cared for and tuned every year with oil change regularly. I say to Toyota that knows what’s happening and causing this to recall this repair and fix it now! Or I leaving Toyota and start buying Nissans Maxima. And telling all my Camry friends to to the same.

I am having same issue with my 2009 Toyota Camry. I have already replaced coils and spark plugs per mechanic recommendation. It did not solve the problem. I dropped it back off to the shop and im having them take a look again. I am also thinking it is the fuel pump causing the issue.

This thread has been my saving grace!!! I've taken my 2007 Toyota Camry everywhere to be tested to find out what has been going on and I finally decided to do my own research. I will be getting my fuel pump replaced ASAP! Thanks again to whoever started this conversation and everyone else who added and chimed in. Blessings to all!!

My car did have this oil consumption problem. At first the dealer said it didn't know anything about it. My car had 270000 miles. They slilly suggested buying a new one. It was the manufacturer that sent me a notice just out of the blue saying that was an oil consumption problem. When I contacted the dealer again all of a sudden they knew about the problem. I had to document the consumption problem. After that they schedule it for being fixed at their full cost. But, that is not the end of the story. Before I even got a mile the car stopped. The dealer several times tried to diagnose why was stopping... And couldn't. I finally took it to a small independent repair shop and they diagnosed it as a fuel pump. That seem to fix it..... for a year or 3000 miles. It broke again. They replaced the fuel pump at no cost. But, in less than a hundred miles it wouldn't start again. I got it to start and Limp back home. So here I am. Two fuel pumps, exhaust gaskets, mass air sensor, 1st Ox sensor ( not cat sensor) and plugs... and it still is stopping. I have a feeling there is contamination in the fuel return lines or the fuel rail. Any thoughts???? Helpless in Virginia.

As spoken above, I had the same issue. I replaced my pump with an online aftermarket new pump! That was a grave mistake! Because for 2 weeks the car was fine. But suddenly it began to have failures and codes for misfire and sensor fault codes etc. But in reality it’s the aftermarket pump! They’re not up to specs and fall below specs and cause issues with the car! Camry pumps need to be 48 - 50 psi to operate the vehicle! My aftermarket fell to 25 psi and codes began to pop up everywhere! The biggest one was misfire in cylinder #1. When the pump falls below spec these codes pop up! The write oem pump for these Camry’s are Denso! All others will work for a few days and fail! Sad fact Denso are $500 plus or minus and must be installed correctly! I took out my new Aftermarket Pump and put in my old oem Denso and all fault codes disappeared!

It's been running fine with the old one but the hard starts on multiple trips have returned! I have to wait 40 minutes before starting when it occurs! Also, I'm getting a P0171 Lean Bank 1 code now! I suspect the Throttle Body needs cleaning now! I’ll advise once I'm sure!

This thread is awesome! After trying various remedies (new spark plug, air filters and so on) I did what was suggested and replaced my fuel pump. That did it! Now my 2007 4cyl Camry starts when warm no problem. Thanks and hopefully this post along with the other ones will help someone else with the same issue.

Make...Model...Year? When the engine was running....any warning lights on or flashing?

I had the same problem with my 2009 toyota camry. It doesn't turn on when it's warm. It cranks but won't start. So most of the comments above says it's the fuel pump(doesn't have to be an after market pump). I wonder if that fix the problem. I also noticed that the sparkplugs were all burned like all black which means the car is not getting enough gas? I don't know if i should buy a fuel pump. The car doesn't have any codes..no check engine light on. I also notice the car burn oil like every 1.500miles.

Coolant temperature sensor is likely the problem...hence the 20 minute wait. If it gets cold in the winter where you live it is likely that you don’t have this issue in the cold. This is due to the rapid cooling of your engine. If you are a DIYer the part is cheap at Rock Auto.

Okay here is the guaranteed fix. Replace the cylinder pump which is part of the assembly in the gas tank. The whole assembly doesn't need to be replaced just the cylinder pump. Make sure it's a own Denso too. The one made for this vehicle. Once that's done the fuel pressures will be correct and your car will start every time cool or hot.

Similar problem on my 07 Camry with 3.5L V6 at 110k miles. Starts fine when cold. Starts fine when hot if restarted within 5 minutes. Once it's been sitting more than 5 minutes hot, have to step on gas pedal and it starts right away. Otherwise, 4 or 5 cranks before it will start, maybe. No check engine codes. But it burned up new Denso spark plugs within 30k miles (replaced at 80k miles) . No other performance issues when it's in operation - MPG/drive same as when I took ownership with 1 mile on odometer. Was not the MAF or PCV sensor. Wonder if it is the fuel pump.

@PD...would be very interested in your response to @Alpha_Proxima....I have an identical issue and have been throwing parts at this Camry for some time now.

@Guru58HFZ hey man, how were they able to replace your pistons for oil consumption at 270k?? i thought the warranty was for under 150k and 10 years.. i have 220k and my camry consumes oil as well, but i thought it was past the replacement warranty

I'm having this issue 09 Camry 4 cyl car runs like a champ from cold start will run for hours straight no prob when turn off if started BK up with a few mins will also start fine after about five or so mins car won't start for twenty or 30 mins definitely a fuel issue mechanic told me today it's a fuel something sensor all he said was it's not to expensive part but a pain in the arse to replace any information on this so called sensor would be appreciated

Thank you very much for the recommended solutions!! I have a 2009 Camry 2.4 LE and just replaced the fuel pump and the strainer. Starts MUCH better. There were small metal shavings on the bottom of the strainer. The kit I (pump and strainer) used was FE0465 (CFE0465 from AutoZone). The Denso pump I replaced was 291000-510. All of the part searches (including Delphi) gave me FE0404 for the pump and FS0179 for the strainer and these were NOT the correct ones for my Camry.
