What is the proper sparkplug gap?

Asked by warfacegod Mar 16, 2013 at 10:07 AM about the 2001 GMC Jimmy 4 Dr SLE 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Haynes manual and various places I've seen online say the gap is .045 inches. On the other hand, NAPA online, some other places, and the engine sticker say it's .060 inches. This makes me 99% sure it's .060 inches. If I'm right, this begs the question as to what else the Haynes manual has wrong.

Thanks in advance.

Be very careful gaping them, if it is even necessary, the center electrode is very easy to break with iridium plugs

I checked RockAuto.com and it showed many plugs were .060. Some said not to gap and a couple said .040 (Denso). It could be that different makes of plugs require different gaps but I would go with the majority and buy plugs that were factory gapped at .060.

40 60 take your pick ,it will light them up ,I know im unorthodox but were not setting up for the nationals now and its maby the first replacement in 12 years, as they burn away they get bigger so @ 40 good for a long time and smoother idle . okulll!
