Transmission stuck in first gear. No resistance when moving gear shift. What would cause this?

Asked by floyd1971 Jul 25, 2015 at 01:44 PM about the 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 SL Standard Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I drove my truck, 2001 GMC Sierra 1500. down over a small hill with a load of wood aboard. I had it in first gear in order to help slow the vehicle down. Wasn't going more than 5mph. When I got to the bottom of the hill and tried to put the truck in revrse it wouldn't go. There is no resistance in the gear shift when moving it from 1 st gear to park. Haven't had any previous issues with it. Transmission fluid is good.
