2006 Mercury Mountaineer front differential

Asked by GoldenGirl59 May 14, 2019 at 09:20 AM about the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer V8 Luxury AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We just had the front differential rebuilt on this vehicle (which we are selling) and the guy at the shop said that it will make noise for a while because it is "preloaded"!  It's worse than before - grinding - gets real loud on the highway and after 70mph, the vehicle vibrates.  Anyone know what might be wrong?  We are selling it only because my dad recently passed and my mom doesn't want to drive in anymore!  It only has 66,059 miles on it!

The shop is pretty good at slinging the BS to you. Yes, the new trans will need to have new fluids and, maybe, a recommended break-in procedure but "preloaded" is stretching the use of the word. The new part should work as quietly as the original did when your dad took delivery of the car.
