how do I put a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer in neutral if battery is dead?

1. Put the parking brake on or block the tires so the vehicle doesn't roll over you. 2. Get under the truck....under the driver side door. 3. Remove the shift linkage from the transmission. It should pry off with a flat blade screwdriver or you may need to remove a hex headed nut first. 4. We're going to assume you were in PARK when you began. 5. Move the shift arm two notches. 6. Truck should be in neutral.

7. If you want the truck to roll forward or backwards now that it's in NEUTRAL; Remove the front driveshaft.

There is a brake shift interlock accessible under the rubber bottom cup holder. There will be a plastic tang that removes and a small opening for a flat head screwdriver. Insert the screwdriver gently, and feel for a plastic toggle that depresses and the shifter can move to neutral.
