Asked by Bec May 05, 2016 at 08:56 PM about the 1997 Subaru Legacy GT Sedan AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My subaru liberty rx 2.5 97 mod was driving
smoothly yesterday then out of no where the car
started making a sort of scraping or crunch like
noise and it just seized mid drive and the steering
wheel went tight. Reds remained on but car
conked out. Tried starting just manage to get it
going the exhaust sounded louder then usual got
around the corner and it did the same thing . The
acceleration would give any power. Now it wont
start.

Get it checked out at your Subaru garage- I know you have a Subaru garage because.......it's a Subaru

Hi Bec, "...exhaust sounded louder": do you mean exhaust, or did you hear a clunking or rapping from the restarted motor? If the latter than yes, indeed, you probably threw a rod, so toss the motor. But if it DOES restart and idle smoothly I'd investigate further before ultimate condemnation. But 19 years is WAY past the normal death curve for these fragile first gen 2.5 DOHC motors.
