2005 Acura TL 3.2 w/auto transmission

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2005 Acura TL 3.2 w/auto transmission.  It seems like my car is not going into higher gears at higher speeds.  It seems like it cannot go past the 4th gear.  At speeds over 60 mph, it sounds like the transmission is in the same lower gear.

Any idea what could be the issue?

JD_2012, I also own an '05 TL with AT that had a similar problem. I lost 3rd gear, though. It would seem to try and shift into 3rd gear, but the RPMs would just keep increasing instead of seeing the drop after the shift. If I let off the gas slightly the transmission would "jerk" into 3rd gear. This was later found to be a blown clutch within the transmission and it had to be replaced/rebuilt. First, check to see if the transmission will shift into 5th gear by putting the shifter in manual mode and up-shifting. If it goes into 5th gear without any "jerk" then it may be electronic (unlikely if the computer is not giving you any check engine light). If it does not go into 5th gear, you may have a blown clutch within the transmission and it will require a rebuild or replacement. Not a good answer, I know. :P

dude, it's time for a new transmission, sorry, do it now before it's too late, because my 2002 just went comepletely bad on me, on the way to work in the middle of rush our traffic. If you move fast you can remidee the situation and maybe find some transmissions for a good price. Oh by the way, it's sound wierd, but used transmission are more expspensive than new ones to install.

My transmission in my 2004 TL does the same. It feels like it takes a while for it to change from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th. You should get your 3rd gear and 4th gear pressure switches replaced. The switches wear out over time and will cause problems such as the one you mentioned.
