Oil light

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 06 hummer h3 is marking the oil light.
It usually doesn't turn on until the engine has been
running a while and warmed up. I've noticed it only
comes on when I come to a complete stop and
need to accelerate again but only on take off. I let
off the accelerator and the light goes off and stays
off once I'm in second gear I suppose (it's an
automatic) I recently changed the oil. I think it's just
low oil pressure. I constantly check for oil leaks and
if the engine burns oil but nothing. The oil is there.
Could it be a faulty sensor? Perhaps the oil pump?
It's running on 5w-30 maybe thicker oil? I need to
get to the bottom of this.

More and likely a bad oil pressure switch. I would still check with a oil pressure gauge to be sure.

I have an 07 hummer and about 2 weeks ago started getting an oil pressure low alert when I had to suddenly slam on my breaks ! I just had the sensor replaced and as soon as I left the auto repair shop the alert started to sound again ! Now I will be getting more of an extensive look at the oil pump as now the alert does not stop at all no matter what the rpm ! I will post what I figure out Tuesday !

I’m taking mine in this Thursday. So far it looks like the engine is burining oil and at an insane rate! I’ll update here what they tell me. Hope this won’t cost me an arm and a leg!

I have a 2007 H3 and when the weather warms to 70 F the oil signal comes on. Last year I used 10W30 oil instead of 5W30, and it worked all last year. This spring the oil dinger went off again at idle. I'm not sure what to try next, maybe a cooler thermostat if they make them. The motor runs great otherwise. I think the problem is probably internal, sludge, or a weak oil pump. it has 135000 miles on it.

No one has even tired to fix mine yet. They all think it needs a new oil pump and that would be a large cost..

It does look like the real fix will be expensive, and extensive but I'm trying other alternatives before deciding what to do next.

My 2007 hummer h2 is currently in the shop , replacing the sensor did not work ( wasted 155$) I took it to another auto shop, a place that a bit more experienced with vehicles like ours and I have been informed that it is a bad oil pump which is going to cost me 1600$

Hey guys! I have a 2007 H3 with 81,000 miles! I’ve had the same issues with the oil light. I have done everything y’all are looking into. Even the costly oil pump change . And guess what! That damn light came on AGAIN!!!! May I ask y’all what type of temp/region do y’all live in??? What I have gathered from all of my research and mechanic fees is the oil runs hot because of no oil cooler on these things which is breaking down and thinning out our oil! I live in Louisiana so our temps can get extreme. My next try will be 15w/50 to see if that stops the madness! Please any feed back is appreciated!

Hello! I had my oil light switch “reset” and they charged me $250 cad !!!! Just brutal. Anyways the problem is still there. I’m not sure what I can do next or if I should bother. Has anyone talked to GM? I feel like they should know what’s wrong with their vehicles.

Hello I'm having the same issues with my Hummer3. It's crazy. I've had a complete oil change n keep them up as required. But when we touch the brake that noise starts back right away. I sit on the brake n gas to just not hear it. I do believe we all need to reach out to GM. This is crazy that so many are having the same issues. I'm not sure if I can get back to the site but someone can text me at 502- 345-8968 if they find out we're gonna keep getting it checked to.

I got the same exact issue. I changed oils sensor, the ECM, and did an oil flush, and Nothing! My mechanic said it definitely is the oil pump, a $1300 job. The mechanic said the way around that rice was to change oil to 10-W40 for Winter time and or 20-W50 for Summer time. He said older cars require thicker oil, despite the dealer saying the opposite, because obviously the car is old. The dealer wanted to inspect the car at $145 Dollars per hour, not counting the work needed. the mechanic said that is their way of cashing in on vehicle owners. I did the 20-W50 last summer and the issue went away. No more shaking! When I went back for the 10-W40 for the winter time and the engine oil signal came back and so did the shaking and shutting off. The mechanic changed the oil back to 20-W50 and said to make sure the car is heated well before driving in the winter. The signal and shaking and turning off went away again. The mechanic did say that in the end the Oil Pump will need to be changed anyways, regardless and then into go back to 5-W30, but instead do 10-W40 (because again the car is old).

Hey Guys just wanted to give you guys and update. I completely forgot I ever posted this! It was a faulty Oil Pressure Sensor. I changed out 2 other sensors as well, I can’t remember which ones exactly. All I know is that this has been one of the most expensive vehicles I have ever owned. (Repair wise) we’re talking -Alternator -Battery -2 hub assemblies -Radiator -Front Differential -half Axle shafts -Air compressor All in less than a year haha

I've had this issue as well on my 07 H3. he problem is that the pump was engineered wrong. Changing oil types throughout the year will bring more harm to your engine then good. even though it appears to fix the problem you are actually putting greater wear on the engine by changing the oil viscosity. the pump is flawed because it's lifetime is so short, However dishing out $1500-$2000 for a new pump is still better than $3500-$4500 for a new engine.

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT CHANG THE OIL VISCOCITY TYPE! You will damage your engine. The pump is designed bad. The pressure tolerances are very limited and the pressure sensor is very touchy when the pressure drops below it's threshold. Chances are that (although annoying ) the light you are getting is probably not damaging your engine, However that being said you still not ignore the problem. A direct pressure gauge will tell you exactly what your pressure system is registering. Since GM dropped Hummer years ago, and the company went out of business. there is 0 chance that engineers will correct the flaw in the future

Wow, I'm having the same problem. Spent $1500 at GM dealership for an engine light they replaced the computer system, some hoses, air valve pump, kept the vehicle off & on for 3 months. Engine light still on & they don't know. Two wks. later the oil light started coming on when sitting idle. They told me the car is fine just verify that oil is still in the car between oil changes. I don't think GM knows how to fix Hummers & I'm trying to find a local mechanic with experience in H3's. Plus, the beeping from the oil light is getting on my nerves. Thanks for all the info above & as soon as I find a mechanic, I will have the oil pump replaced. Thanks!

that what i did i just unplug my oil sending unit and the beeping stops yes

Has anyone found any solution?

Pour a container of Lucas oil (heavy duty) for vehicles with more than 75000 miles into your oil tank. This increases the pressure of the oil flow and should correct the problem.

Has there been any updates for the 2006 Hummer H3 3.5L oil light issue? Where is the oil pressure sensor located? Thanks in advance..

The oil sensor is located right by where the oil filter is. We changed mine it was ok for a little while but back to the light coming on. The engine runs fine, no shaking or noise but the oil light will still come on. So if anyone has an update on what else they have done or found out that would be great! Thank you!

I have a 2007 Hummer H3 with 125699 miles. I swear this car has never given me any problems outside of the recent oil light along with the singing sound and now the oil disappears. It’s not coming out on the ground, this it was suggested it could be spraying out if someone didn’t put the air filter on right. Well that would make 3 places that wouldn’t have put the air filter on right if that were the case. Hard to believe. If anyone else has this problem...oil being depleted a month after service please advise of your remedy! Also, the dinging sound saying your car needs oil can be stopped by pushing the brake pedal down 4 quick times while the car is off then push and hold for 5 seconds on the 5 push and turn the car back on. It worked for me...for that from a Jiffy Lube agent.

Hi , I have hummer H3 2006 with 145000 miles and the car is in Caribbean island (hot all the times) I bought the car few month ago and as the temperature gauge was always 3/4 and little up and the oil signal and ring started when the temperature goes up, I decided to change several parts and flushing all coolant system. I changed Water pump, thermostat, service belt, belt tensioner, AC compressor, Oil Pressure Sender / Switch, Oil filter and oil change with 5W30 as recommended by constructor. I found another oil sensor as parts but impossible to locate it. it is sensor with small filter. I don't know what was the oil before my first service. Now, my problem is exactly the same. I have absolutely no oil leak or other problem. We check with OBD and we found nothing interesting. My mechanic said that maybe it will be judicious to clean engine oil 5w30 with liquymolly solution and put 10w40 with new oil filter. I don't know if it can be a solution ? Or we need to change oil pump with oil pipe but we are not sure that the problem will be solved. What do you think ? I wait a new fan clutch too because the car begin hot too quickly and I think it's not normal. I read all the thread but for someone just change the sensor works, for others the problem stay the same. I don't know what to do. Thanks for your help. PS I don't know what to think about lucasoil heavy duty ?

What is the difference between oil sending switch sendor, and oil pressure sensor ? the photos of the parts are totally different and one have a small filter with round plug and 3 connector and the other one have oval plug with one connector and no filter. If someone can help me to understand please. Me I change the oil sending switch just near the oil filter. But where is located the other one ?

I just went through blinking and dinging oil light on the dash of my 2006 H3, like everyone, I did the oil change first using factory specs w5-30 SAE with 6 quarts and a filter, of course the light came back on when coming to a stop and motor at temperature, but went away once it was pst idle, having no knocking sounds and without any visible leaks, it was time to inspect the pressure switch, going through the passenger side fender well, I noticed some oil leaking around the switch, then pulled the electrical connection off , I discovered oil inside the switch connection. So it was time to replace the switch that had been in from the factory 240,000 miles. After the switch was out the plastic top was very loose and had been leaking by causing the switch malfunction and the light to come on giving false read on oil pressure. After the new switch was installed and test drove, no issues with the dash light blinking or dinging. The oil pressure sensor should be replaced like a maintenance item every 100,000 miles if not sooner since it is plastic and goes through extreme temperature changes. I hope this helps!

I have a similar problem with my 07 H3. It has 205000 kms and is maintained regularly by an awesome mechanic. He is stymied by this issue as well but I will approach him with the thoughts provided by Guru97 above. You can shut off the beeping noise by hitting the button on the odometer display. Even in a Canada it will still do it in the winter if I have been driving long highway distances. Wish me luck!
