If my timing belt goes out, will it damage my engine?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Acura RL with 106,000 miles on it.  The dealer wants me to spend $2k and replace the timing belt and water pump.  I'd rather wait another 50,000 miles or until the belt breaks, but I don't know if that will cause engine damage (if the belt breaks)?

I seems that the 3.5L in your car is a interference engine. Which means if the timing belt fails than it could possibly caused serious engine damage. I would change it now. Really it should have been changed 1,000 miles ago.

No question you should have it replaced. This will extend the life of your engine and the longevity of your car.

Dealer said if you wait on the $805 to $935 scheduled maintenance at around 105k miles and the belt fails which will casuse the push rods to bend....That repair is around $2500 just an fyi.
