What does it mean when 4WD pops up on dashboard

Since it is an AWD system (always in 4 WD) It probably indicates an issue with the system. Is it always on or periodically flashes? Do you have abs codes stored in your brake module?

Read your owners manual. It may mean the AWD is working as your car is normally FWD. Does this happen in slippery conditions?
