my engine just revs as if car is in park while it actually is in drive mode.

Asked by kenovo Mar 10, 2015 at 04:02 AM about the 1999 Acura TL 3.2 FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I engage the drive mode, the car moves but after a short while, it just revs as if the gear is in neutral or park. It picks on its own after a few seconds or minutes. Pls any ideas what could be wrong? My automatic gear oil level is good. Proble  occurs both in automatic transmission mode and manual drive mode. Thanks

Unfortunately, this most likely is your only warning that your trans is about to drop.. start saving. It probably was really cold weather when it failed to engage, and once you got a little heat from friction it was ready to go in gear. Sorry.

P.S. If your trans has more than 180K on it, get it fixed or replaced, before it gets you stuck in traffic or the middle of nowhere.

THE SHIFT SOLENOID HAS BECOME WEAK OR CLOGGED. FIRST PULL THE SOLENOIDS AND CLEAN, THEN CHANGE THE FLUID AND FILTER WHICH IS ON TOP OF TRANS. THESE TRANS WERE RECALLED BY ACURA AND LIMPED THRU THE WARRANTY. I HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND DID THIS REPAIR AND DROVE IT FROM FLA TO COLO. WHEN U DRAIN THE FLUID FROM TRANS DRAIN PLUG LOOK AT AMOUNT OF SEDIMATE ON MAGNET. GOOD LUCK 720 451 277 TWO
