2007 Chevy Cobalt

I own a 2007 Chevy Cobalt LS. It is a manual and has a 2.2 ecotech motor.
Recently it has started to sputter, while maintaining speed and also
speeding up. In addition to that, it will sputter while stopped for a couple
minutes, like at a stoplight. When it sputters while I'm parked, the car will die
if I don't rev the engine. Also, when it sputters while driving, the RPM meter
will go to 0 and stay there until I turn the car off and then back on again.
Most recently, I had trouble starting it and had to turn it over quite a few
times to get it to start and while doing so could smell strong gas fumes. Any
ideas of what could be wrong?

Could be a bunch of things. The very first thing to do in a situation like this is have the car scanned for trouble codes. There is information stored in the computer that a technician can use to lead him to the problem and prevent you from wasting money replacing parts that don't need replacing.
