How do you program the garage door opener from mirror

My manual doesn't have this info.

Press and hold one of the "Home link" buttons on the rear view mirror at the same time press and hold the transmitter button of the garage door opener 1-3" from the buttons on the mirror until the red led on the mirror blinks fast.

I am trying to use opener (keypad) to open my gate. My gate opens when I press 1147. a remote (as stated) is different than my Key pad with 4 numbers which I can not hold all at one time. How do I get the keypad to open my gate?
