Won't start hot after running 3 hours on highway

Asked by dennistimer Feb 09, 2015 at 03:28 PM about the 1989 Ford Mustang LX Hatchback RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Yesterday upon getting to my off ramp, the car stalled at the bottom and would not restart. Had her towed home, starts and runs fine (only 15 seconds or so since timing cover was removed) and I am suspecting the coil ... but why would it run on the highway at speed and stall at idle?

When you got off at the off ramp did the car die while idling at the end of the ramp at a stop sign or did it die while at speed? If it died at idle then I would suspect the IAC (idle air control). I am assuming the engine is a 2.3l 4 cylinder. When was the timing belt last replaced?

I have the timing cover off, looks good and marks are on. I didn't notice it had stalled until the light turned green and nothing happened. It "almost" started a couple of times; the cooler the engine got it would run for a few seconds or so and then stop.Yes, the 2.3L 4 cylinder.

I did have a check engine light come on (never really lit up all the way) the morning before at 3:00 in the morning shortly after I left the house. Got gas and everything seemed fine, the check engine light has not come on since.
