Does anyone know how to work the air controls on a 1966 mustang? I'm sure this is a standard Ford part.I'm not even sure what they're called, fan / air conditioning / force blown air, etc.. My 1966 mustang came with A/C standard. In the dash there are chrome controls for the air. One lever is horizontal and has about 5 notches that it clicks into place. It slides from left to right and back. Have no idea what that does. Directly underneath are three vertical levers.. The first one is labeled HEAT. I can't figure out if it being in the up position is turning the heat on or off. Next to that is TEMP. Next to that is a blank one. All three slide up and down. Does anyone have any idea how these work? I'm trying to get the heat to work and am freezing my a** off, as it seems to be blowing A/C.

OK, First off, The early '65-'66 Mustangs all had hang-on air cond with a separate unit under the dash. It was not integral. Now your levers should be as follows: The top switch that moves right to left is the fan speed switch. The first lever on the left that moves up and down shuts off the heater system. You won't hear anything move because this cable runs under the hood and shuts off a coolant control valve that is mounted on one of the heater hoses near the firewall. The middle lever adjusts the amount of heat you want. At the top is the cold setting and the bottom is maximum hot. The third lever, which is on the right and should be marked"DEF" but might have worn off from 46 years of use, controls where the air is coming out of. All the way up is for the floor and all the way down is for defrost / windshield. If the blower doesnt work or the fan doesn't come on with the ignition key in the on position then you need to check the fuse for it in the fusebox( I don't remember which one it is,maybe check the owners manual if you have one or find one on ebay) or the heater resistor which is under the hood mounted on the heater box on the far right side of the firewall below the windshield. It will have 2 wires going to it. That resistor gives you your different speeds on the blower fan. If that is burned out you will not get any fan speed at all. If it's blowing air but it's cold, then your heater core may be plugged up or your radiator may be low or empty. Chek the radiator first then feeling the heater hoses with the engine warmed up and running. both hoses should be hot to the touch, if not or if one is hot and the other is cold or even just luke warm, then your heater core is either completely clogged or partially plugged up and probably will need replacement or at the very least back-flushed. Prestone makes a backflush kit which is just a "T" fitting you put in the bigger 3/4" heater hose and hook a garden hose to and comes with directions. Also make sure your air cond. is completely turned off, there should be no air at all coming out of the 4 vents in front of the hang on under dash a.c. unit. That is for air cond. ONLY and has nothing to do with the heater or the heater controls. There should be two knobs on the front of that unit. the left should be for on and off, the right should be fan speed on the air cond unit only. Depending on how it's wired in, It is possible to have both the air cond and the heater running at the same time which you don't want to do if you want heat so make sure that unit is OFF. Also all 3 of those control levers are hooked to cables. Look under the dash and check to make sure those cables are connected and not broken. Sometimes they stiffen up and break. A little WD-40, PB Blaster or white lithium grease in a spraycan will lubricate them and make everything slide easier, especially in the cold weather.. Good Luck, Keep us informed. Kenny/MrBlueOval
