66 mustang turns over while connecting new battery

I am replacing the battery in a 66 mustang.  When I connect the cables the car
attempts to turnover.  No key in ignition.

It was, I taped both with a hammer, thinking they might be stuck...they were....as no problem connecting battery or starting the car. Thanks
