What type of vehicle and year are you talking about here ... more information may be helpful. I have an 02 Explorer where the overdrive 'button' is located at the end of the column mounted shifter. You can turn it on and off at will. For the check engine light, you will need to have it scanned to see what code comes up.

I think it's an 04. Thanks for your reply. I will check that.
Don't hesitate to have your vehicle checked for that 'check engine light'.
My 2003 had the same problem, only intermittently. Brought to the tranny guy and it was a bolt on electronic gizmo on the tranny. Took about as long to lift the truck as it did to change the part. Total cost, about sixty bucks.
Thanks for all your info will check that.
I have the same issue , however I have a code po745. Any info anyone can share would be greatly appreciated
Our 1998 Ford Explorer has the same O/D flashing issue with check engine light. Neither were a problem until we had to change engines on it with another 1998 Ford Explorer. Before the exchange there wasn't an issue with the transmission or any lights on. When we try to take it for a drive the overdrive keeps kicking in and out and we are at a loss for what the issue is.
There is a transmission range fuse. It can cause your vehicle to go into limp mode and you od light at the end of you shifter to flash. It is under a dollar to fix verses a new transmission that would have shown the same problem, at least in my case.

I have a 2005 ford sport track. It only slips in 2nd gear. Its rough as shes idles. When i drive her from a block there is no problems but if I drive her across town the OD light starts to flicker. Ive had this truck for around 6 months. Drives better when I turn on Overdrive. Any idea what could be going on?
