all of a sudden but the car isn't running any differently the car runs fine and sometimes the noise will stop for a 5 or 10 minutes and then come back again. The car never over heated or was low on oil. I took it to a mechanic and he says I need a new engine I just dont understand how this can be especially since there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the car except for this knocking noise.the fluid levels are all good, no overheating, nothing any idea what it could be?

your knock sensor is going out, also could be a bad lifter. go out and buy a bottle of marvel oil. pour half of the bottle in the oil. drive it for a few days and if you hear it still then take it in for a full oil change. when the oil is new. only put in 4.5 quarts then add 1 full bottle of marvel oil additive.
And don't forget to find a new mechanic.
Cam chain makes the same noise, if the setup (2) one front and one rear is the same as the 2003. Engine has to come out of the vehicle to change the rear one and guides.
