Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Im almost at a loss here need advice..will try and
make this short and sweet.  son was gone for 3
days came back and his explorer wouldnt start
saw smoke he thought came from the
battery..battery is 4 months new ..had tested was
good. we replaced the starter. when he tried to
start again I saw the smoke felt positive cable hot
to touch. no corrosion visable. did notice bumps
about 9 inches down the cable ..suspect corrosion
but no corrosion on upper cable. checked grounds
looked good.cleaned with wire brush just in
case.could not locate ground to motor. no
corrosion to fuse box under hood where positive
connects....thoughts?

not belt.noticed it drivers side about where positive cable is down to the starter. ..my thing is can the corrosion build up that far down the cable and not show on the terminal? When i got there 1st thing i checked was his terminals..which were loose..corrected that. better connection but still just a click. dash board and everything comes on..nothing abnormal. forgot my meter at the lake so having to work without.

If it is a click-click-click- you hear then it is coming from the solenoid. Still, a bad solenoid should not cause electrical wires to heat up unless a short is contained therein. Is the solenoid on the fender well on the 20004 or part of the starter? If it on the fender well, it self grounds at the attachment points. Check the cables going down to the starter and make sure they are not grounding out at some location along the travel.

its one the starter. tested wires, relay, even had new starter tested..ha e a few mkre thkughts...possible key code erased(meh) or vapor lock..trying other thingsbefore doing that dreadful thought..appreciate any thoughts
