2004 ford explorer coolant

Asked by Rcaw2 Dec 06, 2018 at 01:22 AM about the 2004 Ford Explorer XLT V6 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am burning coolant (not leaking, no puddles in
driveway). It appears to be steamming from top of
engine and pooling in creases as it cools. I have
seen some burning from behind as well. I am
adding roughly a gallon every  other day, and truck
will overheat if left too long at idle.

Get a compression test down, sounds like you may have blown a head gasket. The steam may be coming from between the head and block. A cooling system pressure test may also reveal a problem as well.

You probably have a plastic thermostat housing. Check where the upper hose connects, it may be black plastic. I've replaced two on my 2003 V6 explorer. They eventually crack and coolant leaks on the top of the engine where it turns to steam or puddles. They now make an aluminum housing for the thermostat. The plastic one is about 90 bucks. The aluminum one a little more.
