Gas Odor and Slow Fill

Asked by BillG63 Dec 17, 2012 at 08:51 AM about the 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe LT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have noticed a strong gas odor on my 2005 Chevy Tahoe(nothing leaking that can be seen);also noticed that when you try and put gas into the vehicle it stops every 1/3rd of a gallon then you hear the filler tube empty and you have to keep doing this . Is this due to a bad sensor somewhere....please help

Check the rubber fuel lines and the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rails. Those are the common sources of leaks. The fuel going in the tank might be an obstruction in the filler tube. There's no sensor preventing you from filling a gas tank.

The gas canister purge solenoid valve could be bad. The tank is supposed to vent through a filter while filling with gas, they get stuck closed and try to vent through the fill neck causing the auto shut off on the pump nozzle to click and stop pumping. These are common issues with these vehicles. The original part can be bought advance auto for about $23. takes 5 minutes to replace. Part# AC DELCO # 214-2149...Good luck

Anyone ever find an exact fix? Mine been doing it over a year. 05 Z71 Tahoe, 2wd, replaced canister, canister purge valve, neck, regulators, even had all lines blown and cleaned bc I knew the charcoal canister was bad in the beginning. Lucky to get $1 in at a time if it doesnt spit fuel back out the top, or at least out the overflow. $20 at a time, 30 mins worth of time, and wasted time and money has got old this long into it
