Gas Odor Leak - 2015 Chevy Tahoe
Asked by Alpha02 Feb 07, 2017 at 09:42 PM about the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe LT RWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Last week I started smelling gas from the
inside of my 2015 Chevy Tahoe. It has 51k
miles and thought this was strange. Took it
to my mechanic and he said it was the fuel
feed line. I went to Chevy to get the part
but they didn't have it so mechanic did a
quick patch until part comes in. So
yesterday my truck wouldn't turn on and
gas flushing down like water. Had it towed
to Chevy dealership. I'm passed my 36k
bumper to bumper warranty and I didn't
purchase an extended warranty. It's going
to cost me $462. Chevy dealer knew this
was a huge safety concern so they gave
me a rental on them. I'm planning to
approach Chevy to negate the $462 as this
is a safety issue and shouldn't be
happening on a 2015 vehicle. Any
thoughts?

If you are not too far past the warranty mileage they may give you a good will repair.
They might do it out of good will, but fuel lines are not part of the powertrain warranty. It might be a 2015 but you do have 51,000 miles on it. Per GM: "Excluded from the powertrain coverage are sensors, wiring, connectors, engine radiator, coolant hoses, coolant and heater core. Coverage on the engine cooling system begins at the inlet to the water pump and ends with the thermostat housing and/or outlet that attaches to the return hose. Also excluded are the entire pressurized fuel system (in-tank fuel pump, pressure lines, fuel rail(s), regulator, injectors and return line) as well as the Engine/Powertrain Control Module and/or module programming."
What's an evap system? Sorry for my ignorance.
Thanks Js08016, I looked the emission control warranty, appears it looks like it's up to 24,000 or 2 years at point of sale of original owner. Since I have 51k, look like I missed this warranty. I just feel since it was the fuel feed line and a 2 year old vehicle at 51k miles, with a malfunction part, Chevy should cover the bill of $462.00. If I would have died, my wife could have sued Chevy. It's not like I bumped a curve or damaged the vehicle. I think it was nice of them to give me a loaner until they locate the part but due to the safety concern, it seems like they would cover the charges.
My 2015 is in at the dealership for the same thing right now. They are charging the exact same amount. We have 70,000 miles on ours and have an extended warranty but only metal components are covered from what we were told today. They told us to keep our paperwork and contact Chevrolet about it because it should not be happening.
Contact GM executive team customer service. They were able to assist me. It took 2 weeks since the part was on a national back order
The same incident happened to me over this Memorial Day weekend. Basically, a pin hole was rubbed into the fuel line by the undercarriage. Warranty or not, this is a major safety defect. I have filed a complaint with GM and expect full reimbursement, including alternate transportation expenses. NTSA should order a recall.

It just happened to me- don't know for sure but they think fuel tank module? 2015 Tahoe with 75000 miles. Estimate is $1000 !!!!
Just happened to me on my 2015 Yukon with 128k miles. National backorder on the hose. Part #84200271. This doesn't sound right for this new of a vehicle..
I agree there needs to be a recall issued. is currently happening to me 2015 suburban took it to dealership 28 Jun for routine oil change and to have cabin filter changed. Left dealership less than 24hrs started smelling straight gasoline coming through vents. Mind you this was not occurring before I brought my truck in for an oil change and if it was the service advisor would have said something about it because the odor is so strong you can smell it outside of the truck.
Chasyl83, What did you find out on this? Why was it leaking? I just took my 2015 suburban in for an oil change and it immediately started smelling like gas after that. I looked underneath and had little gas drips on bottom of the tank. Any feedback on this would be great!

We paid GM to repair the vehicle’s fuel line. We did file an online NHSTA report but at the time, summer 2018, they told us there had not been a recall. Seems to be a trend here.... and it is a huge safety issue.
Hey Jon, We found out Our Fuel Feed Line (which was not cheap to replace) had a pin side hole in it and was spurting gas out (See photo) Mind you we previously owned a 2007 Suburban and Never had this issue occur. I contacted GM and have been fighting with them to get this issue recalled; as I found several other Suburban and Tahoe Owners who have had this same issue.
Jon we too had gas on bottom of tank. Entire vehicle smelled like raw fuel. See photo. I hope this helps you get your vehicle issue resolved.
Dear All: This happened to our 2015 Tahoe. Basically, it is a factory issue; our plastic fuel lines were installed too close to the undercarriage. While driving, the vibration caused the fuel line to rub against the undercarriage, resulting in the pinhole. At the time, I insisted that this is a huge safety issue, but GM said there was not enough complaints.
Happened to my 2015 Tahoe LTZ to. Pin hole in the plastic fuel line from rubbing the undercarriage.
Happened to my 2016 Silverado last night, I smelled gas and saw the gas gauge dropping. Pin hole in fuel line spraying fuel above the tank, it was at the plastic isolater where two lines are held down to the top of the tank. Electrical tape and 14 tie wraps got me back home and to the dealership this morning. Part number 23248011 not in stock, but ordered. 40,332 mi on the odometer and I rented a car until it is fixed. Thank goodness it didn't happen in my garage, might have burned my house down.
I have a 2015 tahoe and about 2 months ago my car also had a fuel line leak gas was pouring out on my driveway got that fixed and 3 weeks ago my torque converter and transmission pump went out 3100.00 out of my pocket then 2 days ago fuel pump went out mine only has 73000 miles on it. Wonder what will go out next this time it was 999.98.and no more warrenty

Ours went out around 50,000 miles 2 years ago. Huge safety issue. Now with 80K we’ve had all kinds of other sensors go out too, and air shocks. For the price of this vehicle, we should not have to be replacing all these high- cost items before 100k.

I just bought a 2020 tahoe 2 weeks ago,has 300 miles on it and I can smell raw fuel. Went into my garage this morning and the whole garage smelled like someone dumped 5 gallons of gas in the floor and closed the doors. This is ridiculous. A $60,000.00 vehicle doing this brand new is poor quality control by Chevrolet. Wish Dodge built a comparable sized suv.
Just happen to me. My 2015 Suburban. Took it to the dealership in Las Cruses NM. Cost me about 700 dollars to replace the hose in the fuel line above the gas tank between were the two doors meet. Looked just like the picture Chasyl83 posted
My 2015 Tahoe just started doing the same thing
You better get it fixed and ASAP!!! Mine started doing this very same thing on Monday afternoon, it caught fire in route to the dealership. The picture I uploaded is of my truck roughly an hour into the 2.5 hours it burned.

Please fill NHTSA complaint too (can be done on-line) — this should definitely be a recall...glad you are safe!
Just happened to me today. I put in a complaint. Still going to fix it but maybe eventually they’ll admit they messed up design on this vehicle. That shaking at highway speed also sucks.

I have a 2015 Tahoe with 81K miles and have the same issue. Gas is seeping down from above the gas tank on the left side near the front of the tank. This obviously is a faulty issue on GMC/Chevy and a serious safety hazard. I’m filing complaint also. Please advise if their is a more cost effective way to get this repaired until hopefully GMC/Chevy issue a recall. Thanks

I can’t believe this is still going on and Chevy hasn’t fixed this. We paid for our repair, and filed a NHTSA complaint online, but we did not file a Chevy request for reimbursement and perhaps we should have. Has anyone gotten reimbursement from GMC or have we all had to pay out of pocket for this design flaw? Most of the mileage when this happens is well under 100K.

My 2015 Denali had the same issue over the weekend while I was outta town. Went to O’Reillys bought a pack of hose barbed, small hose clamps, split loom and electrical tape. Better than new!!! Dropping the tank wasn’t to bad.
Have a 2015 Tahoe LTZ with 120k, same thing just happened to me. $553 later from replacing the fuel feed pipe leaking. I agree, as pricey as this vehicle was, I have had several issues that I shouldn’t have. Disappointing because I really like the Tahoe but will probably look at others when I decide to upgrade.
Same on a 2015 Tahoe LT purchased new in Texas not 20 miles from where it was manufactured in Irving. Met a factory worker at that plant that warned me about buying this 1st year model of their new body style because in his words "none of the parts fit together properly" on this vehicle. I should have listened to his advise because of the long list of issues and yes I agree this is a safety recall issue.
I have a 2015 Chevy Suburban LTZ 4 wheel drive, I had the same issue last week. It cost me $685 to get fixed. This should definitely be a recall.
Our 2015 Tahoe is at the dealer today getting this issue fixed. Already submitted a safety complaint with NHTSA. Going to attempt to contact GM about reimbursement. Anyone had any luck with getting reimbursed? How there hasn't been a recall issued for this for this is beyond me. Should've been issued after the first repair. All it would take is someone tossing a cigarette butt underneath it in a parking lot, and then boom!

Has anybody had any luck getting this covered? It just happened on our 2015 Suburban. This feels very similar to the condenser issue from a couple years ago. Guessing most of you experienced that too. Was ultimately covered, but took an army of customer complaints to get GM to do something about it.

funny i've been smelling fuel inside my suburban 2015, inside and outside of vehicle. I looked underneath carriage today 1/20/2023 and see this and it looks awefully familiar. One question i do have for those of you with code scanners did you see any values on the fuel trims. my long term fuel trims are currently about -10% meaning the truck is using 10% more fuel on average. the high pressure fuel pump seems to be ok, but my oil kinda smells like fuel a little and i was maybe suspecting the fuel smell from the front of truck but the trims would be around -20% and making the truck dieseling on turn off. Additionally, the issue seems to worsen when tank is 25% to empty i guess because that when theres more vapor in the tank than liquid. And accelerating seem to sputter a little. Let me know if these symptoms seems similar to anyone else with the ability to scan the OBD2 port for some values (LTFT). I already changed the purge valve on intake manifold for evap as i kept getting the "tighten gas cap" pop up a lot.
