Reverse quit working

My reverse abruptly quit working
while backing up in 2003 Chevy
Tahoe. Felt like I had hammer
braked and I had hit something
big. It made a loud noise but do
quickly I don't can't describe the
noise other than the car skidded a
bit when it happened. It goes
forward and shifts in all drive
gears. The stick goes into reverse
and car sounds like it is preparing
to move backwards but will not. It
made a loud whining, screechy
noise in drive and reverse for a
few minutes but that disappeared.

Thank you GA. I was hoping it would be a simpler fix the whole time knowing it wouldn't be. Appreciate your advice
