Porsche Cayenne rebuild

Asked by William Sep 07, 2019 at 09:05 PM about the 2008 Porsche Cayenne S AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am considering buying an older Porsche Cayenne with engine problems.  I
recently rebuilt an '08 Mini Cooper with a blown engine, and that turned out
great.  Also rebuilt an '82 Porsche 928, so I have some skills.  Would it pay to
buy a lower mileage Cayenne and put the labor and materials into rebuilding
one that has the cylinder scoring issue?  I guess it would depend on how low
of price one would sell for. Opinions?

Only you can determine if you want to start a project like that. Look up the values for a 2008 Cayenne and calculate what it would cost you to rebuild it and add the cost of the vehicle. Are you under water or over?

I would buy a good used engine. Do research as the engine block may not be able to be bored out and might require sleeves.

There is a business in GA that bores and re-lines the block with the Nikasil (sp?) coating. Expensive, but with new pistons a long lived engine. After some of the research I’ve done, a BMW X5 V8 May be a better bet.
